Alex Boican – Artist
I am a self-taught artist based in Folkestone, UK, specialising in both abstract and figurative oil painting. My style is best described as expressionist. However, it tends to vary. I quickly tire of easy solutions, and I am in a perpetual search for new ideas and themes, colours and shapes.
Drawing and painting have always been my passion. In my late teens I started making oil paintings in Romania, and after arriving in the UK in 1990, I continued painting as a hobby for around 15 years. At that point, I interrupted painting to pursue literature studies, eventually gaining a PhD in Romanian Literature.
In 2020 during the lockdown, I moved from London to Folkestone on the Kent coast, and rediscovered oil painting. Picking up the brush again I understood that painting is what I want to do for the rest of my life. Ideas for new paintings come to me every day, as if they have been secretly stored up during the time I did not paint. The only worry I have now is that I will not have the time to transpose all these ideas into paintings.
